On a recent trip to Edmonton to attend a convention sponsored by the Alberta Food Processors Association, a local company found gold. Medicine Hat Meat Traders took home 1st Place for the best Beef Jerky at the bi-annual meat convention. The top award was a great honor to the local company as it enters it’s fourth year of production. Specializing in natural local beef from local producers, MHMT combines great ingredients with professional knowledge to produce this award winning Jerky. At this event they also captured Bronze in all three sausage categories, as well as in two categories for cured hams. Having recently opened a store in the middle of Medicine Hat on Kingsway Avenue, they hope to share the fruits of their labors with old and new customers alike.

Medicine Hat Meat Traders is preparing for its own Olympian sized contest in Mid-March. They go for gold in several categories of meat production. Cured meats like back bacon, bone in hams, boneless hams and bacon have their own category. There is also a sausage division which includes large sausages like salami, small diameter casing sausage and also emulsions like wieners or bologna. They will also be competing in the Peoples Choice Jerky and Pepperoni contest.
This is all part of the Meat Industry Convention and Trade Show which is put on by the Alberta Food Processors Association. This is a great opportunity for butchers across Western Canada to get together and share resources. There are presentations involving the various parts of meat production. Many industry suppliers put on a trade show to showcase the latest in equipment, process controls, spices, and other butcher supplies. There is a banquet to recognize individuals who have contributed to the meat industry.
This is also the time where they award the meat contest winners which Medicine Hat Meat Traders hopes to be a part of. We are excited to hone our skills to do well in this contest, as well as increase the types and kinds of meat products we can offer our customers. Drop by the store on Kingsway Ave to sample some of our entries and see which is your favorite.

The all-new 2010 Honda Accord Crosstour has arrived at Honda dealerships Canada wide. The Accord Crosstour evolves the Crossover Utility Vehicle (CUV) concept by integrating a sleek and aerodynamic shape that blends sporty, low-profile contours with versatile CUV functionality.
"Our concept is to broaden the appeal of the Accord line-up by leveraging traditional Accord strengths of fun-to-drive performance and handling, while also adapting to shifts in the Canadian light truck marketplace," said Jerry Chenkin, executive vice president of Honda Canada Inc. "The all-new Accord Crosstour achieves this by offering a modern interpretation of a CUV, while integrating the refinement and efficiency of a premium sedan."
Derived from the Accord Sedan, the Accord Crosstour maximizes car-like ride and refinement, yet maintains capabilities consistent with a CUV's increased ride height and all-weather potential. The Accord Crosstour's styling builds on the Accord's familiar character lines and adds a bolder front grille complemented by a durable lower-body appearance, wedge-shaped C-pillars and an aggressive rear stance. The flowing roofline narrows smoothly into the rear of the vehicle to create an aggressive-looking design, which conceals a unique cargo area that can accommodate large objects, exceeding the capacity of a sedan.

American Honda Motor Co., Inc., delivered a zero emissions hydrogen-powered FCX Clarity fuel cell electric vehicle today to its latest customer, 2010 Canadian Olympic hockey team captain, Scott Niedermayer. Also a team captain for the Anaheim Ducks National Hockey League team, Niedermayer is a leader both on and off the ice, promoting an environmentally responsible lifestyle and the protection of natural resources.
"My love for nature and the outdoors developed while growing up in Canada and I hope the generations after me get to experience nature as I have," said Scott Niedermayer. "Everyday actions, like driving the zero-emissions Honda FCX Clarity, will help to make this dream a reality."
Honda's FCX Clarity produces electricity onboard from hydrogen via Honda's innovative V Flow fuel cell stack with water vapor as its only emission. Significant advances include exhilarating performance, futuristic sedan packaging and a driving range of up to 240 miles*. FCX Clarity's fuel efficiency is three times that of a comparable, modern gasoline-powered automobile.

West Point, Ga.: The 2011 Kia Sorento just debuted at the Montreal Auto Show last week — but I had to go to Southern Georgia to test this second-generation mid-sized SUV. While the Sorento has been with us for a while, I just found out that this Sorento was the first to come off the line at the all-new Kia plant here, and that is a story all its own.
Just an hour south of Atlanta, this brand new plant started rolling vehicles off the line in just the last month of 2009, all being stockpiled for release now. And what a plant it is — a $US1-billion factory — which is even more startling because it sits on 890 hectares in an area of the South that has long been low-income farming and textile mill country; an area that, frankly, has been in slow decline for decades. The last vestige of industry is the textile mill that left town about 10 years ago.
Then Kia entered the picture. With its potential of 1,700 jobs (plus as many as 8,500 spinoff jobs), it was a godsend for a region that typically had an unemployment rate hovering around 15%. In fact, it was the mayor of the 3,500-resident town who told us that more than one lawn sported signs saying

Reverse mortgages have grown much these days to achieve greater visibility in the eyes of the public. They can help senior citizens enhance their lifestyle by offering greater financial freedom to them.
A reverse mortgage converts home equity into cash flow for the senior home owner. The cash flow can be obtained as monthly incoming payments or can be drawn upon as an equity line for one-time payouts – or a combination of the two.
Reverse mortgages can be a source of immediate cash when needed. There are many providers of reverse mortgage loans these days and the competition has made it easy for any qualifying senior to obtain necessary cash to improve their lifestyles.
The senior taking reverse mortgage can continue living in the same home that has been reverse-mortgaged and get monthly payments from the reverse mortgage. This additional income compliments any existing retirement income (including social security) nicely. Seniors can easily calculate the amount of money they will get from this loan through the use of a reverse mortgage calculator.
