Article by Stephen Maser of Raymond James

The primary concern I hear from people is the need for financial advice and where to find it. There are many places to find an opinion, from the internet, TV, magazines and newspapers, however trying to sift through that maze of information can be overwhelming. You need to find answers to your financial needs and that first step should be a financial advisor.

While all the outlets mentioned can vary in the quality of their advice, the advice given could be damaging if you’re unsure what financial planning entails. Here are some quick ideas to find a professional to help you with planning your financial future:

  1. Interview Advisors – The most important trait in any professional advice is trust. This is going to be a long term relationship so make sure you can work with the person you hire.

  2. Qualified or Not – Planning will dictate what financial tools you will need. Try and find a planner who understands how financial products can work together as opposed to one who can only sell insurance or mutual funds.

  3. Are You Rich Enough? – There are some advisors that will only take on clients who are the richest among us. Be sure if the advisor you speak to is willing to take you as a client and that you won’t get ignored. Some firms have account minimums and will charge you for not being rich enough.

  4. You ARE Rich Enough – If you are willing to save and plan, you are a qualified investor. You don’t have to have $500,000 lying around to need an advisor or to avoid getting a “minimum account fee” charged. Your finances and your future are deserving of professional advice at any stage of your life.
