Nearly 100 years of history are housed in the Monarch Theatre. From its' start as a Vaudeville theatre, through the silent film era, and most recently the "talkies", the Monarch has shown Medicine Hat a good time. Now open, there is a new agenda in mind.
The historic Monarch Theatre was purchased by the City Centre Development Agency in October of 2008 with the intention of reopening the building to the public as a not-for-profit independent movie theatre and performance space. The principle goal in reviving the Monarch Theatre is that having an attractive, busy movie theatre in the heart of the city will generate the kind of regular, sustainable business that the area requires in order to flourish. The new theatre will also provide a service to other not-for-profit organizations in need of affordable presentation, performance, and meeting space.
